TEFL Lesson Plans (A Wiley Brand)
Ch2:
Helping successful language learning
In the classroom

·      Make new language relevant to leaners
·      Ensure students feel relaxed
·      Grade lessons to become progressively more challenging
·      Give students encouragement and motivation
·      Repeat language items several times so that they’re truly learnt
·      Use non-verbal communication, such as mime and facial expressions, to reinforce meaning
·      Employ regalia to clarify meaning and crate interest
·      Set new language within a clear context
·      Follow this order for students listen, speak, read and then write
·      Don’t correct every single mistake, which inhibits communication, but correct select ones to help students improve
·      Make sure students know the grammatical principles of the language in order to construct sentences
·      Teach culture, language and content together
Outside the classroom

·      Get some good learning materials, such as a dictionary and a grammar book
·      Practice frequently
·      Read sentences or at least individual words aloud to get used to pronouncing the language
·      Try some of the same enjoyable activities in English as in their own mother tongue
·      Use memory aids such as flashcards
·      Set short-term and long-term learning goals
·      Be willing to make mistakes

Applying the silent way to your course
·      Limit Teacher talking time. Don’t always jump in when your students need a little thinking time
·      Use visual prompts in the classroom including color and shape.
·      Have useful chats on the wall
·      Remain silent while the students are working so that you can observe more. Then you’ll know their strengths and weaknesses

Allowing students to acquire, not lean, with the natural approach
Learning is very much a conscious process. You sit with a teacher and pay attention to the rules, structure and vocabulary. However, acquisition is basically picking up language, allowing the brain to do what it did naturally when you were an infant
Typically, you speak to the class about a given topic, or play an audio recording, while the students listen. Then the students do an activity based on what they’ve heard, such as filling in a gapped txt or labeling a diagram. You correct the students according to the meaning they’ve conveyed, not their grammar. Then you set a more challenging communicative activity on the topic.
·      These are some of the basic principles”
·      The main focus is communicative ability
·      Vocabulary is the most important part of the language, not grammar
·      Language is all about meaningful messages

Applying the natural approach to your course
·      Get students responding to a listening text by following a map, filling in a grid, or putting information in order?
·      If you have periods of speaking about a chosen topic, students can acquire expressions in English very naturally from you
·      Don’t over-correct students. Allow them to continue during a communicative activity for as long as they’re able to convey the right meaning (despite dodgy grammar)
·      Use closed questions before open ones. For example, give students multiple choice or yes/no questions before expecting them to be comfortable enough with the vocabulary to express and opinion
Teaching playfully with Suggestonpaedia
It’s believed in the power of both conscious and non conscious influences on the mind. The method uses carefully selected music, art, decorations, and furniture in the classroom.
·      The introduction stage
·      The concert session
·      Practice  time
·      Discussion time

2017/2/19 Morton Arboretum

Today we went to Morton Arboretum. Guess who I saw? I saw nine birds looking at me. I saw them really are alike this…(here is a silly face). I mean I saw Ying xi, Eric Ken James and Freddie.

We went to the children garden, and then we went to the maze. Ken and James were running in the maze and playing hides and seek. I found them nine times. They are bad at playing it. Then Eric came, so we went to the playground. We covered the sign, so it said please climb on the watering can. We played tag again and again until Ying xi was here.  So we played zombie tag and chased her. Ken said, “get back here, Ying xi!” We were making fake swords and Pokémon. James made fire. It took him one hour by using wood chips. I told my dad I was thirsty, so daddy gave me the water bottle. I drank it all up and poured some on my head. I filled the water bottle back up, and poured it into a flowerpot. I said “Eric, come over here! I whispered into his ear, let’s make a mud pool.”

Dad called us for lunch. I ate pasta and Eric ate pizza. Poor Ken and James ate our food, but Ying xi left. After we ate lunch we saw trains. I saw a fast train, also I’ve learned that when the light gets green, that train will go on that track. I saw all kinds of trains including Thomas, then we went to the maze again. Eric said he wanted to go to tree house when he was there, he was scared to climb it up, so he just went to the small one. And in there, guess what? It was crazy‼ A boy said Eric has a fur brain. I said “what?! What on earth did you say? If you say that one more time, I’m going to tell your mom.” So he was quiet. He didn’t talk for a while.

I ran out of the tree house and pulled Eric out. I taught him to be brave, and he went to the big tree houses. I was behind him. Eric asked me where did my dad go, I have no idea, I responded. So we went back to our table where we had picnic. Later on after Ken and James rejoined us, we played stones and battles. Eric had his own stick, so he was by the big rock making swords to battle at level four. Oh great! We didn’t have enough time to get to level four. Eric asked, “What time are we coming back here?” My mommy said “tomorrow!” I said bye-bye to everyone. Before I left, I saw Fredie as well. The end.

2017/2/20 Field Museum, Auto Show and Chinatown at Chicargo

Today I went to the auto show with my dad.  We went on the test track. Daddy wished he were driving the car. Actually somebody else was driving for us. The car was called the Ram. That car went up a big hill and went down safely. When I was in that car, I said, “I am gonna be sick for a week.”

Now let me talk about when I went to the field museum.  I saw my best friend Julian.  We saw dinosaurs, mummies and Egyptians. When I was in the museum, my dad, grandma and grandpa were by the lake picnicking. Somebody gave my grandpa a big fish.

I said good bye to Julian and daddy picked us up at the door. I cried waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.we drop daddy off at the subway. We went back home. I had car sick. I ate BBQ ribs we bought from Chinatown. I don't really like its taste, but I got muscles. The end.
